I happy to see my result! 981 - that means one question wrong! (actually by my calculations it should be 981.8)

Not too bad eh?

I don't have any idea what my wrong question was, except that it was in the

If you read EVERY one of these questions on this page, make sure you

understand them all (i.e. do plenty of looking up stuff) I can pretty much

guarantee you will do well. I never passed any of the transcender tests, but I

DID learn why I got the questions wrong!

How does TCP/IP resolve a host name to a hardware address?

- If the computer being called is on the local network, its hardware address will

be obtained using the ARP cache, or by sending a local broadcast asking for a

reply including its hardware address.

- If the computer is on a remote network, ARP will determine the hardware

address of the default gateway for routing. So...first the IP address is extracted

from the HOSTS file located under WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC , and

then ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) is used to resolve the IP address to a

hardware address.

A windows NT machine may be installed as just a server - it does not have to

be used as a domain controller...

- Servers do NOT procedd domain logons.

- A server maintains ITS OWN local user account database

- Dom. ctrlrs cannot be moved from one domain to another easily

- Servers that are NOT D.C.'s can access domain security databases.

When client machines use server apps such as SNA or SQL server, they rely on

the Service Advertising Protocol (SAP) agent located at the server to broadcast

network information messages. When a WINNT machine runs applications that

use SAP, an 8-digit hex INTERNAL NETWORK NUMBER MUST BE SET

FOR THE SERVER.

System devices such as SCSI controllers are more important than automatic

devices, and must be started first. From the WIN NT setup, you can choose the

Add/Remove SCSI adapters from the options menu item to install SCSI and

IDE CD-ROM drivers. The procedure to add a CD-ROM and a SCSI

controller in a system is as follows : first install the driver using windows NT

setup, then use the DEVICES option in the Control Panel to set the startup value

of Scsicdrm to SYSTEM.

The LMHOSTS file keeps track of the IP address mappings for network

machines that need to be addressed through a router. When IP addresses

change, the LMHOSTS file becomes outdated. To keep this file up to date, the

easiest way is to use the directory replicator service.

NWLink or IPX/SPX is the "language" that WINNT and NetWare may

communicate with. Without NWLink/ IPX/SPX, communication is not possible.

For NT ONLY computers to be able to access a NetWare server, "Client

Services for NetWare" must be installed. For ANY NetWare machine to be

able to access an NT Server, "File and Print Services for NetWare" must be

installed. For ANY MS computer to be able to access a NetWare server,

"Gateway Services for NetWare" must be installed on the NT server.

When installing GSNW on Server, you install Gateway (and client) Services for

NetWare, whereas on NT Workstations, you can only install "Client Services for

NetWare".

Whenever installing "Gateway (and client) Services for NetWare", it is not

necessary to install IPX/SPX - it is automatically installed if it is not already

installed.

After you have created a user account and group on the NetWare server, you

can select a server, set up the gateway, and make a connection to a sharable

resource. Setting up the account involves :

- Checking the enable Gateway box,

- Entering the acct name and passwd that is used by the NetWare Server.

- CSNW does not need to be installed because it is already a part of GSNW.

- GSNW is required to administer NetWare services. Clients (NT

workstation/95/WFW) CANNOT administer NetWare services because they

DO NOT have GSNW installed.

In a TCP/IP network, it is decided to use DHCP to manage IP addresses. On

the SERVER - Install DHCP server service through the control panel Network

Applet.

- the DHCP scope is defined using the DHCP manager.

On the Clients - Enable DHCP using the control panel Network Applet. The

device log is enabled through the registry.

WINS servers store mappings between IP addresses and computer names. All

necessary WINS settings are managed through the WINS manager. These

include :

- Defining and configuring Replication partnerships

- Defining and configuring Replication time intervals

- Managing static address mapings for non-WINS-enabled computers.

- Managing ANY WINS server in the internetwork.

- Can be run from ANY sever machine (not necessarily the WINS server).

A DOMAIN may be re-named by using the Network applet in the Control

Panel to change the name of the domain.

When adminstering user accounts on a domain, it is usually a good idea to use

network home directories. To assign home directories under C:\Home to each of

10 users at the same time, ....

- From User Manager select the users from the user list

- Choose properties from the user menu

- Choose the Profile button, select connect to C:

- Enter "\\HOME\%USERNAME%".

The usernames are automatically substituted when the home directories are

created. It is suggested not to use this technique with FAT partitions.

Q. The Sales domain trusts the Marketing Domain. How do you provide

members of the Marketing domain with dial-in Access to resources in the sales

domain?

A. Use the Remote Access Admin application to grant dial-in permission to

each user in the Marketing domain.

- To grant dial-in permission to users in a trusted domain, user manager for

Domains utility need not be used. Instead, you can use the Remote Access

Admin application from the dial-in SERVER.

1. Select server menu, choose select Domain or server.

2. Enter the name of the trusted domain, then select permissions from the user

menu.

3. Select EACH INDIVIDUAL USER within the domain, and grant them

dial-in permission.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

- Only LOCAL ACCOUNTS are defined in the LOCAL accounts database.

- You can work with local accounts from User Manager for domains.

- DOMAIN ACCOUNTS can ONLY be defined on an NT DOMAIN

CONTROLLER computer, with User Manager for Domains.

- DOMAIN ACCOUNTS are specified on PDC's and are replicated to BDC's

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

- The EVERYONE group can :

a) Log onto a computer locally if it is NOT a domain controller

b) Log onto a computer remotely (over a network) even IF IT IS a domain

controller.

- It is only the right to log on locally that is revoked from the EVERYONE

group to a Domain Controller.

After enabling File and Object Access auditing from User Manger, you can

audit a variety of events in specified directories, including file opening, changing,

execution, deletion, and permission modification. It is important that the correct

selection

- "Replace Auditing on SubDirectories" and

- "Replace auditing on existing files" are made.

Otherwise only file creation and subdirectoy events will be recorded.

If you try to delete the partition that has the NT System files on it from the Disk Administrator, you are presented with an error message. Also, NO CHANGES

are made in Disk Administrator until you exit, or choose the Commit Changes

Now menu item from the partition menu.

Local Groups CAN CONTAIN user accounts OR Global Accounts from

trusted domains. Also, Local Groups are only available in their OWN domain.

A NetWare print Queue is equivalent to a NT network printer - you just connect

to it. When you choose a print queue from the shared printers box, if the driver is not available locally, you will be prompted to install it.

A print driver must be installed on the server where a TCP/IP printer will be

created. If not listed, you should try a compatible driver.

Q. What must be done in order for a Win NT client to connect to an X.25

network thru a dial-up PAD?

A. 1) Dial up the PAD

2) Establish the connection between the PAD and the Server-side SMART

CARD.

PPTP is a UNIVERSAL standard allowing any client machine that is using RAS

to run applications across a variety of Multi-Platform Interprocess

Communications technologies, including WINSock, named Pipes, Remote

Procedure Calls.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

- Printers or ploters that connect to UNIX machines use the TCP/IP protocol.

- A WIN NT computer (server) that defines a share to a TCP/IP printer

MUST have TCP/IP installed.

- Any client that wishes to access the printer MUST have a protocol installed

that is common with ONE of the protocols on the WIN NT computer (server)

that defines the printer.

Example. A printer is connected to a UNIX macine on the network. This

plotter is defined by a WIN NT server that has GSNW installed. What

protocols must be installed on the server so that a NetBEUI client may use the

printer?

Answer : GSNW being installed on the server has no bearing on the situation.

In order for the client to access the server, the server must have NetBEUI

installed. The printer is connected to a UNIX machine, so it MUST BE a

TCP/IP printer. So for the server to access the plotter, it needs to have

TCP/IP installed. So...the answer is :

NetBEUI and TCP/IP

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To use RAS on a modem line when no network card is installed, the MS

Loopback Adapter must be installed so that the communications protocol can

bind to it. Each protocol needs a hardware device or adapter with which to bind,

so the MS Loopback Adapter and driver must be used as a substitute when no

network adapter card is present.

Defn : redirects all network requests back to the host machine without the need

for a network adapter to be installed on the machine.

If you want to fool Windows NT into thinking a network is present, for

example, when you want to demonstrate the network capabilities of Windows

NT without being connected to a network, you can install the MS Loopback

Adapter driver in the network application in the control panel. This driver allows

the computer to connect to network resources that are actually local. This

feature is particularly useful for demonstrating applications such as SQL Server

for Windows NT at events and trade shows.

The MS Loopback Adapter can also be used to enable a stand-alone computer

to generate UPS shutdown messages. The Windows NT System Guide states

that the alerter and messenger services must be started for a computer to

generate a UPS alert. These services will not start without a network adapter

present. Installing the MS Loopback Adapter allows the Alerter and Messenger

services to start on a standalone system.

Printers in a printer pool always share the same name and printer driver.

Therefore, if you want to add a new printer to a pool of already configured

printers, you need only specify the port for the new printer. Add printers to a

printer pool by :

1 - Open the print manager.

2 - Select "Create Printer" from the Printer menu.

3 - Choose the DETAILS command.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The only way a NEW keyboard of a DIFFERENT TYPE than the current

keyboard can be installed is by running Windows NT setup.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To configure a registry on a remote windows NT computer you need to do the

following:

1 - Make sure Server services if running

2 - Start the registry editor on the local computer

3 - Select the "Select Computer" option on the registry menu.

4 - Select the computer whose registry you want to edit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

After just installing a WfW client on your NT network, the following must be

done to ensure it will be recognized by a domain controller during logon :

1 - On WfW client, open control panel

2 - Open network applet.

3 - Choose "StartUp"

4 - Select "Log onto Windows NT or LAN Manager Domain"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

After selecting Make Network Installation Disk from the Network Client

Administrator, you are promted to indicate a share directory from which the

installation files are copied. After indicating the shared directory, you are

promted to indicate :

a) Size of floppy disk.

b) Type of Network client to install.

c) The network adapter card.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

How to change properties of printers on remote servers from WIN NT :

1) Open Print Manager.

2) Open Printer menu.

3) Choose "Server Viewer" menu item.

4) Select server and printer you wish to work with.

Installing a large NT TCP/IP network. It will use DHCP. As you install and

configure client machines, the easiers way to assign IP addresses is :

Once the DHCP server is set up, install TCP/IP on the client machines. You will

be prompted as to whether or not to allow DHCP to automatically configure the

machine. You should choose YES.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Directories on a WinNT network are shared with MAC client in a VERY similar

way as they are shared with DOS clients. This is done using FILE MANAGER.

NTFS volumes CAN be shared. The only restriction is that NO TWO shared

directories or volumes can be part of the same directory tree.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To use windows 3.1 on an NT network, the "FULL REDIRECTOR" must be

used, which permits advanced networking capabilities like logging on and full

browsing capabilities. The "BASIC REDIRECTOR" is smaller in size, but only

provides access to shared files and printers.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The following statements are true of trust relationships :

- A trustING domain can provide file access to a trustED domain.

- A trustING domain can provide printer access to a trustED domain.

- A trustED domain provides user acct info to the trustING domain.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

READ PERMISSION IS GRANTED BY DEFAULT ON SHARED

DIRECTORIES!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Account operators can create, delete, and modify other user accounts and

groups, but does not provide its members with any other significant special rights

or permissions. Account operators CAN log onto or shut down the server, and

keep a local profile.

Account operators CANNOT assign or administer user rights.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

UNlike mandatory user profiles, personal user profiles often change between

logon settings. Mandatory User profiles are saved with a .MAN extension, while

personal user profiles should be saved with a .USR extension. P.U.P.'s are

meant to be accessible from any machine in a domain. Admins can add network

connections to any PUP.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

User Names are NOT case sensitive, however passwords ARE case sensitive.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

When creating a ss w/o parity, at least 2 physical disks are needed, and if the

selected partitions are NOT approximately the same size, Disk Administrator

will make them approximately the same size.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

If data changes frequently, backups using DIFFERENTIAL backups will be

more time consuming, so INCREMENTAL backups should be used.

Incremental backups usually use less tape space, however theyr equire more

tapes overall.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The WIN NT disk cache is ALWAYS maintained automatically.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

TO add a printer to an existing printer Pool from print manager: - select create

printer from the printer menu, then select details.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Audit policy applies to the domain ONLY if you are administering the domain

itself. PDC's and BDC's share the same Audit policy. When you administer a

computer that is not a domain controller, that policy applies to the computer that

you create it on ONLY.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

How do you share and secure a remote printer on a network?

1 - Select remote printer from Print Manger

2 - Select properties from the Printer menu, and Share it

3 - Set the permissions on the printer by selecting the permissions menu from

the SECURITY menu.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mac users want to connect and print to various printers on the APPLETALK or

ethernet networks. How do they do this?

- They will use the CHOOSER interface on their computer for both PostScript

AND Non-PostScript printers.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The best way to save local configuration information (registry info) using the

WinNT backup application is to :

1 - Select the drive containing the registry

2 - Choose the backup registry checkbox

3 - Run backup

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

When remote computers connect to a RAS sever through PPP using microsoft

TCP/IP, they are automatically provided with an IP address that comes from a

static range assigned to the server. If absolutely necessary, Windows NT RAS

clients also can use an IP address specified in the client machines PhoneBook.

You have 2 hard disks. System files are on C, D has some other stuff. The

BEST way to improve pagefile performance is to place a pagefile on C and

another pagefile on D, although as a general rule it is best to keep pagefiles and

system files apart.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The system partition, which is the partition that contains the hardware specific

files needed to load Win NT server must be a FAT partition of at least 2MB on

RISC based systems. The rest of the files may be placed on a NTFS partition

for maximum security.
