ARC path syntax

· multi is the adapter's ordinal number. For example if there are two

SCSI adapters in the system, the first to load and initialize is assigned 0

and the next is assigned 1, and so on for all of the adapters in the

machine. Remember, the HBA BIOS must be turned on to use multi

syntax.

· SCSI was used in the 3.1 versions of NT before NTLDR was enabled

to scan for the HBA's BIOS. The syntax and ordinals are the same as

they are for multi, but the SCSI driver must be copied to the root of the

boot drive (or root of floppy if booting from the FT floppy) and renamed

to NTBOOTDD.SYS.

· disk: for SCSI syntax this is the SCSI ID of the disk; for multi it is

always 0.

· rdisk: for SCSI syntax this is always 0; for multi it is the ordinal of the

disk-that is, the order in which the disk appears in Disk Administrator

(disk 0, disk 1 , . . . ..).

· partition: the partition where NT is installed. Partition numbers begin

with 1, not 0.

* ENSRE PAGEFILE.SYS IS NOT ON A STRIPE SET WITH PARITY

On Intel-based systems, you also need to make a recovery diskette. This is simply a

formatted diskette onto which you have copied the key system files that may need to

be restored in order for NT to boot (note that you will need to clear the

system/hidden/readonly attributes to copy these files):

· NTLDR

· NTDETECT.COM

· NTBOOTDD.SYS (On systems with older SCSI drives-if the file

doesn't exist, you don't need it.)

· BOOT.INI

· BOOTSECT.DOS (If you have a dual-boot Setup)

On RISC-based systems, the needed files are OSLOADER.EXE and HAL.DLL. Use

the ARCS menu to create an additional boot option with the following values:

· OSLOADER= SCSI(0)DISK(0)FDISK(0)\OSLOADER.EXE

· SYSTEMPARTITION=SCSI(0)DISK(0)FDISK(0 or 1, depending

on whether you want to boot from the first or second floppy drive)

· OSLOADPARTITION and OSLOADFILENAME to the same values

they're set for in your regular boot menu

You need to make new Nt setup disks, How? Run winnt.exe with /o or /ox switch

Read carefully: they had really wordy questions on stripe sets with parity & stripe sets without parity - and seemed to use the phrases interchangeably. Watch if the question is looking for the amount of data that can fit on the disk or the total amount of disk space (ie. the parity bit takes up 1/n of the total disk space)

Know that RAS log is used for troubleshooting RAS errors. This is enabled by editing the registry. This question will have been tested in the NT Workstation exam.

Know what utility to use in monitoring RAS. Example, Mary is trying to establish connection to RAS but the connection keeps dropping. What utility do you use to monitor this connection. - A: dial -up network monitor

Striping with Parity - This is the best Fault tolerance. Need at least three disk drives. Non of the partition must have boot or systems files. Use the same disk space from each disk. If one of the drives fail, get a new drive that is at least equal to other stripe sets and from Disk administrator, do this (this is the tricky part that is tested)

1)Select the strip set that is working

2)Select the new drive

3)Click on Generate from Fault Tolerance Menu.

NWLink is a protocol that is used to communicate with Netware. It can be used at client and NT Server.

Gateware services is a gate to Netware. When installed, it configures NWLink by Default. You can not

use NWLink to access files on Netware from NT Server. You must install Gateway Services for NetWare.

Q. You have a DHCP Server and a client that dial in through a RAS Server. What else can be assignated to the client beside the IP?

A. Default Gateway, WINS address, DNS address, subnet mask

Question stating that you have a group of users who need to copy 100mb of files to an NT server and then network slows down what should you do?

Answer: Install second NIC and enable IP routing (careful question has alot of irrelevant info.)

Name Resolution for RAS Servers and Clients

In addition to requiring an IP address, RAS servers and clients on a TCP/IP

network might require a mechanism to map computer names to IP

addresses. Four name resolution options are available on a Windows NT

network: Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), broadcast name

resolution, Domain Name System (DNS), and the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files.

RAS servers can use all these name resolution methods for operations

performed on the server.

RAS clients are assigned the same WINS and DNS servers that are

assigned to the RAS server. You must use the Registry to override this

automatic assignment. For more information about overriding the automatic

assignment of WINS and DNS servers, see Appendix A, "RAS Registry

Values."

RAS clients in small networks where IP addresses do not change can use a

HOSTS or LMHOSTS file for name resolution. By using these files on the

local drive, you do not need to transmit name resolution requests to a WINS

server and wait for the response over the modem.

Assigning IP Addresses to RAS Clients

In Windows NT, each remote computer connecting to a RAS server through

PPP on a Microsoft TCP/IP network is automatically provided an IP address

from a static range assigned to the RAS server by the administrator during

setup.

Windows NT RAS clients can also use a preassigned IP address specified

in their phonebook. In this case, the Windows NT RAS server must be

configured to permit users to request a specific address.

For automatically generated IPX network numbers, the Windows NT RAS

server uses the NetWare Router Information Protocol (RIP) to determine an

IPX network number that is not in use in the IPX network. The RAS server

assigns that number to the remote client.

NetBEUI and RAS

NetBEUI is suited for use in small workgroups or LANs. A NetBIOS gateway

and the NetBEUI client protocol are installed by default on all Windows NT

RAS servers and on most Windows networking clients. Previous versions of

Windows NT RAS clients, LAN Manager RAS clients, MS-DOS RAS clients,

and Windows for Workgroups RAS clients require NetBEUI.

The RAS server then authenticates the remote user using the PPP

authentication protocols (PAP, CHAP, SPAP). The protocols invoked

depend on the security configurations of the remote client and server.

Once authenticated, the Network Control Protocols (NCPs) enable and

configure the server for the LAN protocol used on the remote client.

When the PPP connection sequence has completed successfully, the

remote client and RAS server can begin to transfer data using any

supported protocol, such as Windows Sockets, RPC, or NetBIOS. The

following figure illustrates the location of the PPP protocol on the OSI model.

Authentication Protocols

RAS uses the Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) to

negotiate the most secure form of encrypted authentication supported by

both server and client. CHAP uses a challenge-response mechanism with

one-way encryption on the response. CHAP allows the RAS server to

negotiate downward from the most-secure to the least-secure encryption

mechanism, and it protects passwords transmitted in the process.

Table 7.1 Security Levels and RAS Encryption Protocols

Level of security Type of encryption RAS encryption protocol

High One-way CHAP, MD5

Medium Two-way SPAP

Low Clear-text PAP

CHAP allows different types of encryption algorithms to be used.

Specifically, RAS uses DES and RSA Security Inc.'s MD5. Microsoft RAS

uses DES encryption when both the client and the server are using RAS.

DES encryption- the U.S. government standard-was designed to protect

against password discovery and playback. Windows NT 3.5 or later,

Windows for Workgroups, and Windows 95 always negotiate

DES-encrypted authentication when communicating with each other. When

connecting to third-party remote access servers or client software, RAS can

negotiate SPAP or clear-text authentication if the third party product does

not support encrypted authentication.

Windows NT RAS supports both the Password Authentication

Protocol (PAP) and the Challenge-Handshake Authentication protocol(CHAP).

PAP uses clear text (unencrypted) password authentication.

It is supported

by the Windows NT RAS server for interoperability

with 3rd party PPP

clients. NetManage Chameleon and Trumpet Winsock are

3rd Party PPP clients that use PAP.

CHAP requires a challenge response with encryption on the

response. Windows NT RAS server supports the following

encryption algorithms in conjunction with CHAP

authentication:

RSA MD4 (or MS-CHAP)

MS-CHAP is Microsoft's version of the RSA MD4 standard. This

is the most

secure encryption algorithm supported by Windows NT.

MS-CHAP correspondsto the "Require Microsoft

encrypted authentication" encryption setting for the

RAS server. Both Windows NT and Windows 95 RAS

clients will negotiate a PPP connection to a Windows

NT RAS server using MS-CHAP as the encryption

algorithm.

DES is the encryption algorithm used by down-level Microsoft

RAS clients such as Windows for Workgroups 3.11 RAS and RAS

1.1a. DES is supported by Windows NT for backward

compatibility with down-level RAS clients.

SPAP is Shiva's Password Authentication Protocol.

Windows NT RAS server supports SPAP to allow dialin

by Shiva clients. Unlike PAP, SPAP does send

encrypted passwords over the wire as opposed to

clear-text

passwords.

Encryption on Windows NT RAS Server

- When you enable the "Require Microsoft encrypted

authentication"

selection, you can optionally enable "Require data

encryption". This

option uses the RC4 algorithm to encrypt data sent

over the RAS session.

- The "Require encrypted authentication" encryption

setting authenticates clients that request the

MS-CHAP, DES, or SPAP authentication methods.

- The "Allow any authentication including clear

text" encryption setting authenticates clients using

any of the authentication methods requested by the

client.

Encryption on the Windows NT RAS Client

The Widows NT RAS client supports all authentication

standards supported by the Windows NT RAS server

except SPAP. Additionally, the Windows NT RAS client

supports the RSA MD5-CHAP encryption standard.

By supporting RSA MD5, Windows NT PPP clients are

able to connect to almost all 3rd Party PPP Servers.

The Windows NT RAS server does not support RSA MD5

because this method requires a clear-text password

at the server.

- The "Accept any authentication including clear text"

option permits the

client to use any of the supported client

authentication methods

requested by the server.

- The "Use clear text Terminal login only" option indicates

the remote

server uses a UNIX-style text mode login. When this

option is selected, the client receives a Terminal

window where login occurs. PAP is used as the

authentication method if this option is enabled.

- The "Require encrypted authentication" option is similar

to the

corresponding option for the Windows NT RAS server.

For the RAS client, however, RSA MD5 may be used,

but SPAP may not.

- The "Accept only Microsoft encrypted authentication"

option is also

similar to the corresponding option for the Windows

NT RAS server. This option permits the client to use

only MS-CHAP.

you have MS Client and Non-MS Clients dialing in to RAS server and need encryption for both. how do you accomplish.

A:Setup one modem port with MS-CHAP and have MS clients dialin there and setup another port with CHAP and have third party clients dialin there.

Had a question about upgrading a previous version of NT to NT 4.0 . Would the registry edits, custom colors, user accounts, groups, network adapter settings etc.. transfer into NT 4.0 during the installation.

The answer was that yes but you must install into the same "windows directory" of the previous version.

How do you promote a server that is a bdc to a pdc from a remote NT

w/s?promote the bdc to a pdc in Server Manager, the original pdc will automatically demote itself to a bdc.

There were questions about NTBACKUP.

* know you cannot backup the registry remotely.

* know you should have a tape backup on each PDC and BDC to accomplish the reg backup.

* know the difference between differiential and incremental (it comes up in a question)

· An incremental backup backs up only those files created or

changed since the last normal or incremental backup. It marks

files as having been backed up. If you use a combination of

normal and incremental backups, restoring requires starting with

your last normal backup and then working through all the

incremental tapes.

· A differential backup copies those files created or changed

since the last normal (or incremental) backup. It does not mark

files as having been backed up. If you are doing normal and

differential backups, restoring requires only the last normal and

last differential backup tape.

a user needs to look at many options on the perfmon.

A: use report view.

You have 4 2Gb drives, 32MB Ram and FAT partition. You want faster access to files, optional results: faster access to paging files and faster access to network. Proposed solution, Have a boot partiton on one disk, format others with NTFS and create stripe set. Have paging file on stripe set, and configure

bindings so the most used protocol is at top of list.

I answered : Solution meets required result and one optional.

The stripe set gives faster access to files.

Configuring bindings give quicker access to network.

Can't have page file on stripe set

2) You have 200 PC with identical SW and HW how do you automate the build: Choose three POLEDIT

UNATTENDED.TXT SETUP.INF SYSDIFF.EXE WINDIFF.EXE UDF

windiff.exe and poledit are red herrings. You definately need unattended.txt and sysdiff.exe.

3) You have NT on a single NTFS partition, and want to install dos. How do you do it, select one:

c) Sys.com and delete all NT files

4) A user prints Invoices and has a paper jam , his application can not reprint the invoices, how does he do it

a) Select Resume Printer

b) Select Restart Printer

c) Cancel doc and resume printer

d) Cancel doc and restart printer

Answer (b) as this will restart the job , rather than just carry on.

5) On domain there is a system policy and user profiles. There are

conflicts between the two. Which takes precedence: System Policy

6) A question about how to run a TSR ( Terminate and stay resident) program that needs to communicate with other MS-DOS apps to control COM port I/0 requests where do you run it. If it needs to communicate with the other DOS applications it will need to run in the same shared memory address.

8) You want to upgrade from 3.51 to NT4.0, currently you have HPFS:

Convert to NTFS and then upgrade, because NT4.0 no longer supports HPFS

9) You want to resolve UNIX host names to IP address on an intranet. Which TCP/IP option do you use:

a) Scope ID

b) default gateway

c) DNS Server address

d) BOOTP address

Answer (c) I think, could do with confiramtion from someone.

Microsoft TCP/IP provides a DNS client for resolving Internet or UNIX

system names. Windows networking provides dynamic name resolution for

NetBIOS computer names using WINS servers and NetBIOS over TCP/IP,

as described in the previous section.

REGEDIT.EXE

REGEDIT.EXE is a Windows NT supplied utility for working with the registry.

REGEDIT.EXE is very similar to the one provided with Windows(r) 95. If you

are familiar with the Import and Export features used often in Windows 95,

the same functionality is provided with Windows NT. See Chapter 5,

"Customizing Windows NT" for examples of how to use REGEDIT.EXE with

Windows NT.

REGEDT32.EXE

REGEDT32.EXE is a Windows NT supplied utility for working with the

registry hives. REGEDT32.EXE provides features that REGEDIT.EXE does

not. REGEDT32.EXE is used to modify the stock registry hive supplied with

the Windows NT 4.0 operating system prior to installation of Windows NT.

See Chapter 5, "Customizing Windows NT" for examples of how to use

REGEDT32.EXE.

Windows NT Setup: WINNT.EXE and WINNT32.EXE

Windows NT includes both a 16-bit and a 32-bit version of setup. Both

provide the same basic functionality but the 32-bit version, WINNT32.EXE,

will only run on Windows NT and can be used to upgrade an existing

installation of Windows NT.

What level of Raid can be used on the Boot/System Partition of NTFS : 1 (mirror)

Your network uses NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport protocol. Half of the client computers use 802.3, the other half use 802.2 frame type. You are adding a Windows NT server computer to the network. This server has one network adapter. What must you do on the new server?

A: On Windows NT Server, the NWLink dialog box allows administrators toconfigure NWLink to use multiple frame types

You have x DOS users and X win95 users who will RAS in. The DOS client supports DES encryption. How can you set the RAS server for maximum authentication security?(Single Answer) A. Require encrypted authentication. (supports DES, MS-CHAP and SPAP - shiva)

A BDC can be promoted to become the primary domain controller. When a

BDC is promoted, an up-to-date copy of the domain's security database is

replicated from the old PDC to the new one, and then the old PDC is

demoted to a BDC.

Server Manager - Manage shared folders and printers on computers running NT.

Use Server Manager to share folders, set permissions on shared folders, view who is using shared resources, and disconnect users from shared resources.

Two networking Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are supported to allow Netware communication:

· Windows Sockets-This interface supports existing NetWare

applications written to comply with the NetWare IPX/SPX Sockets

interface.

· NetBIOS-This interface supports sending and receiving Novell

NetBIOS packets between a NetWare workstation running Novell

NetBIOS and a Windows NT computer running NWLink NetBIOS.

NWLink also provides NetWare clients access to Windows NT Server applications such as Microsoft SQL Server(tm) and SNA Server.

Windows NT Server computers running NWLink can support client applications for

MS-DOS, OS/2(r), Windows, or Windows NT computers through a variety of

communications mechanisms, such as Windows Sockets, Remote Procedure Calls

(RPC), or Novell NetBIOS, over the IPX/SPX transport.

Potential NWLink Gotchas

There are a couple of common problems associated with NWLink. The first

is that some people think that by installing NWLink, they can access file and

print resources on a NetWare server. NWLink is only a transport protocol,

not a redirector. To access file and print resources, the computer will need

client redirector, such as CSNW or GSNW.

The second problem is that with the default setting of Autodetect Frame

Type, the frame type is set to that of the first frame received, and not

configured to communicate over all detected frame types. You may need

to manually configure the appropriate frame types for your installation.

Migrating from NetWare to Windows NT

The Windows NT Server Migration Tool for NetWare (NWConv) allows you to

migrate NetWare servers to computers running Windows NT Server. The Migration

Tool transfers user and group accounts, and directories and files from NetWare servers

to Windows NT Server domain controllers. Account information can optionally be

copied to a separate domain controller.

The Migration Tool allows you to:

· Preserve appropriate user account information

· Control how user and group names are transferred

· Set passwords for transferred accounts

· Control how account restrictions and administrative rights are

transferred

· Select the directories and files to transfer

· Select a destination for transferred directories and files

· Preserve effect rights on directories and files

What Will Not Be Migrated

The Migration Tool will not migrate the following NetWare information.

· Login scripts - Windows NT logon scripts provide similar

functionality.

· Print server and queue information - Printers can be set up as either

Windows NT printers, or, with GSNW and NWLink in use as a

Gateway, clients from both NetWare and Windows-based networks can

use the NetWare printers.

· User-defined objects - These Bindery database objects have no

Windows NT Server equivalent.

· Workgroup and user account managers - There is no equivalent group

in Windows NT Server. The User Account Managers is just a concept,

not a real group in the binderies.

· Passwords - Windows NT Server does not have the ability to read

NetWare passwords.

Q.You are going to migrate a Netware server to NT 4.0. What do you need to install before perform this migration?

A. Gateway Services for Netware in the NT Server. (GSFN)

Q. One NT server, 100 Windows 95, protocol IPX/SPX. Neither clients can communicate with the server, Why?

A. Wrong Frame type.

16. Server boot sector virus. You erase MBR. After restart you receive message that operating system could not be found.

b. Use NT installation disks to start. When prompted use emergency repair disk to recover boot partition.

To use an HP network interface printer the Data Link Control (DLC) protocol

(included with Windows NT and discussed in more detail later in the course)

must be installed. Installing this protocol can either be done during Setup, or later through the Network applet in Control Panel.

Printer pools have the following characteristics:

· All print devices in the printer pool share the same printer name and act

as a single device. Pausing the printer, will pause the entire printer pool

and changing any properties will affect all print devices in the printer pool.

· The print destinations can all be of the same type or mixed (i.e. serial,

parallel, and network).

· When a job arrives for the printer pool, the spooler checks to see which

print device is available. The spooler checks for available devices based

on the order in which they were added to the printer pool in Print

Manager. Therefore, if the printer pool consists of mixed print

destinations, make sure that the fastest port is selected first when setting

up the printer pool for optimal performance.

Note Windows NT imposes no limits on the number of print devices that can be in a printer pool.

Special Groups

In addition to the built-in groups these groups are created by the system and

are used for special purposes. Because the memberships of these groups

cannot be altered, the groups are not listed in User Manager for Domains.

However, when you administer a computer and Windows NT presents lists

of groups, these special groups sometimes appear in the list. For example,

they can appear when assigning permissions to directories, files, shared

network directories, or printers.

Group Refers to

Everyone Anyone using the computer. This includes all local and remote users (that is,

the Interactive and Network groups combined). In a domain, members of Everyone can

by default access the network, connect to a server's shared network directories, and

print to a server's printers.

Interactive Anyone using the computer locally.

Network All users connected over the network to the computer.

System The operating system.

Creator Owner Transfer of permissions to creators of subdirectories, files, and print

jobs. For a directory, if permissions are granted to the Creator Owner group, the creator

of a subdirectory or file will be granted those permissions for that subdirectory or file.

For a printer, if permissions are granted to the Creator Owner group, the creator of a

print job will be granted those permissions for that print job.
