51 Questions, 90 Minutes, 705 Pass:

INSTALLATION

1. Know the minimum requirements for NT 4 - 120M Disk, 12M

RAM (I386),

16M RAM (RISC), and 486-DX33 [1Q]

2. Learn about unattended installs - what setup.inf, unattended.txt

and

the UDF files are for, and how SYSDIFF is used. (Don't get this

confused with windiff). An excellent recource is Microsoft's

Deployment

Guide: Automating Windows NT Setups, which can be found at

http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation. [5Q]

3. Know how to uninstall NT. Boot to DOS, run SYS.COM and

remove the NT

directory and file. [1Q]

ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT

4. Learn about Creating and Deleting accounts, and the audit

capabilities in Account Manager.

5. Know when to delete and when to disable an account

6. Know how to rename an account, and when to copy an account,

and that

the copied account DOES NOT have the same permissions to

resources as

the original (unless all resource permissioning is done by groups -

i.e.

how it is in the real world)

CONFIGURATION

7. Learn a bit about the registry. If you're using NT in your work

environment, what you learn here should suffice for the exam -

common

keys...Learn about the differences between REGEDT32 and

REGEDIT.

REGEDT32 allows permissions to be set etc, REGEDIT can

search for

values.

8. Learn about control panel - What each Applet can do - Know

that sound

drivers are installed with the Multimedia applet, and which applets

to

use to install SCSI disks, UPS etc. You should also know which

applets

are machine specific and which are user specific (I don't think it's

tested but it helps th know in real life.)

FILE SYSTEMS

9. Learn about file systems - NTFS, FAT & HPFS. NTFS has file

level

security, and is faster over 400M, but bigger overhead, FAT is

compatible with MSDOS & win95. (Note Win95 FAT32 is NOT

NT compatible).

For upgrading NT3.51 HPFS you must upgrade to NTFS BEFORE

upgrading the

OS.

10. Learn about Disk Administrator, what the menu items contain,

and

when you need to Commit Changes. Learn about Volume Sets and

Stripe

Sets. Know that voulme sets do not improve performance, but

stripe sets

do. Know that you can expand NTFS volume sets, but not Stripe

sets.

SECURITY

11. Learn about Permissions both for Shares and Local Access.

Permissions are cumulative, except for No Access, which

overrides

anything. If you have NTFS and Share permissions, add up the

cumulative

permissions of each, and take the most restrictive of these two.

[4Q]

12. Kown what happens when you move files or folders between

NTFS

partitions, and within them. My rule of thumb is that if a new file is

created, it inherets the permissions of the target folder. Copying

within a partition - new file - target folder permissions. Moving

within a partition - no new file (directory pointers are just updated)

:

original permissions. Moving across partitions - this is a

copy/delete

action - new file - target folder permissions.

APPLICATION SUPPORT

13. Learn about application support: Default MS-DOS have their

own

NTVDM - each NTVDM is like it's own DOS computer, single

thread and

separate memory space. Win16 all share WOW NTVDM - shared

memory space,

but single thread for each process.

14. Learn how to start WIN16 apps in own NTVDM, and when to

do this.

Some Apps are unstable, but need to share memory - start these

in the

default NTVDM, start others in their own NTVDN. If Win16 apps

use DDE

they do NOT have to share the default NTVDM

15. Learn about Application priorities - LOW, NORMAL, HIGH

and REALTIME

(admin only). Know about CONTROL PANEL | SYSTEM |

PERFORMANCE.

16. Know about starting applications from the command line using

/separate, /min, /high etc etc

NETWORKING

17. Know how to share a folder, and who can do it - Admins and

Power

Users

18. Know how to set security on shares.

19. Know how to install networking protocols, TCP/IP, NetBeui

and

NWLink, and in which environments they should be used. Know

that

NetBEUI in non-routable. Learn about TCP/IP, that a unique

address and

the correct subnet mask are needed. Know that to talk to remote

computers a default gateway will also be needed.

20. Know that NWLink is Microsoft's version of IPX/SPX Netware

Core

Protocol, and that this is ALL that is needed for Applications to

talk

to Netware servers. For File and Print services the workstation

must

also be running CSNW. Learn about the CSNW applet in control

panel -

esp. Print Banner, Print Form Feed and Notify When Printed.

21. Learn how to connect to a Netware 3 server with Bindery

emulation

(Preferred Server in CSNW), and a Netware 4 server using NDS

(Default

Tree and Context.)

22. Know how to change a password on a netware server - Setpass

and

CTRL-ALT-DEL

PRINTING

23. Know how to set up a printer and document defaults. Know

about

Microsoft's terminology Print Device is the hunk of metal and

plastic, a

Printer is basically a concept the print driver as such, Spooler is

the

driver that does the work. Learn about setting printer priorities

and

about setting print times. Learn about printer pools, and how to

restrict long reports to after hours.

24. Learn about the options in the print folder and print manager -

Document Defaults, Server Properites - ports, forms and

advanced.

TROUBLESHOOTING

25. Learn about the Emergency Repair Process. You CANNOT

boot from

this disk, you must boot from the three setup disks (regenerate

them

using WINNT.EXE /OX). The repair process inspects the registry

files

(and returns them to the state on the repair disk), inspects the

startup

environment, verify the system files and inspect the boot sector.

26. Have an idea about what sort of errors occur if Boot.ini,

NTLDR or

the kernal are missing or damaged.

27. Learn about ARC paths

28. Learn about EVENTVWR (event viewer) and that only local

administrators can see the security log.

29. Have a working knowledge of Performance Monitor, and know

that you

can use Task Manager to see the processor utilization.

There are probably more, and I'll post them if I remember them.

Thank

you to all on the list that have taken time to give advice and tips.

My

major piece of advice is to have a good play with NT4, get familiar

with

the UI and with what is available in each of the menus etc.
